Video Transcript for All About the 5-Flat Trailer End 48" Harness

The 5 pole flat pincher 00:00:02 that we're using here to ease our installation for the trail wiring is part number 20017. All right, so we're going to convert our trailer with a 5 pole signal here, 5 flat. This is for Victor boat trailers because inaudible 00:00:15 the blue wire, here, which is the signal for reverse for your trailer brake lock out solenoid, so we'll strip off a quarter inch of the blue wire, here, and we'll install it into our buck connector here, that goes to our solenoid for hydraulic brake actuators. It is part number DM11993. We'll crimp it into place. We can hook up the rest of our wires to where they go, based upon our connection, here, and take our old connection, here, and cut off these zip ties to separate our wires so we can access them a little bit easier.

Now, we're going to start with what's our green wire, strip back to about 1/4". We're measuring off where we need to trim back our green wire. Get right about there. We'll cut the excess off of our green wire, strip back about 1/4", install our butt connectors. Now, we'll take the brown wire for our right side and we'll do that one, next. Then, we'll do the same for the other wires.

With all of our electrical connections made now, we can use our heat source, seal our heat shrink butt connectors up. To help tidy up our wires, I'm going to take some electrical tape, here, and wrap around our wires, just so we don't have a lot hanging down in this'll make a nice, clean install. Now that we've done that, we can actually go hook it up to our truck, and go down the lake and enjoy our boat. That completes the installation of the 5 pole flat pinch, part number 20017.

I could not have asked for better service. My order arrived quickly and as advertised and the process, from start to finish, could not have gone better. eTrailer will be my 1st. choice for future orders.

by:

Purchased wiring adapters ,LED lights delivery shipment was very prompt and accurate GREAT SERVICE,,,,,picts of end product

by:

Decent 5 way plug. I did not use the blue wire taps, instead I soldered the connections as always solder wire splices that are exposed to the weather as my trailer stays outside. I did add corrugated wire wrap to it to make a cleaner installation.

Seems to be of good quality. Since this harness has six wires, I'd like to see six of the wire splice taps included, instead of just the four.

  • What is the Function of the 5th Pin on a Trailer Connector 5-Way Flat Connector
The 5th wire on a 5-Way flat connector is intended to connect to the vehicle's reverse light circuit. This is for the exact situation you described, so the 5th wire can signal a surge coupler's electric reverse lockout. If you need a 5-Way flat trailer-side connector, you can use the Draw-Tite 5-Flat Trailer End 48 Inch Harness # 20017. This connector is designed for the 5th wire to carry the reverse light signal from the vehicle to the brake actuator. The # 20017 connector will work...

  • Can Euro 7-Pin be Replaced by American 4-Way?
Sure, you can cut off the Euro 7-pin and add an American-style 4-way. I recommend using the Wishbone Wiring Harness # A20WB, which actually has five wires; it splits the running light wires so you do not have to run a jumper wire from tail light to tail light. You will need to do some splicing and you can use the accompanying diagram of a Euro 7-pin to see how they are typically wired. I recommend using butt connectors # DW05743-10 to connect the 20 gauge wires of the harness.

  • Wiring a U.S.A. Boat Trailer to a 9 Wire European Trailer Plug
The 5-Way connector on your boat will be wired as follows. Green is right turn/brake, yellow is left turn/brake, brown is running lights (both sides), white is the ground or earth connection, and the blue wire is the reverse lockout or reverse lights. I searched for a connector on the internet that matches your 9-wire connector and came up with nothing. I would recommend using a circuit tester, item # PTW2993, and wire by function only. Have a helper activate all of the various functions...

  • What are the Wire Functions for the 5-Flat Trailer End Wiring Harness, # 20017
The 5-Flat Trailer End Wiring Harness, # 20017, is what is a called a wishbone harness. The brown wires contain the running light signal. It is split at the plug and ran to each side of the trailer so you do not have to have a jumper wire between the two tail lights. So the wire that is yellow and brown goes to the driver side for running lights, and the green/brown wire goes to the passenger side for running lights. The all yellow wire contains left turn and brake lights. The all green...

  • Parts Needed to Wire a Trailer With 5 Wires to Be Compatible with a 7-Way
I'm assuming you're wanting to convert your trailer with what looks like it could be a 5 flat wiring connection to a standard 7 way round. If that's what you're wanting to do, you're going to need to first find out what each wire does and connect them to the 5-Flat Trailer End 48" Harness # 20017. For the # 20017 harness, the white wire is going to be the ground, the green wire is right turn/brake, the yellow wire is left turn/brake, the brown with green tracer is right side tail lights,...

I would be happy to help! Based on the pictures you provided your trailer uses the discontinued Tie Down Engineering 70LC, and we will need to get a bit creative on a replacement as there is not a direct replacement available. What you will need to do is use the a folding tongue kit like the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3" x 4" Tongue - Bolt On - Up to 7,000 lbs # FHDPB340301, but you will first need to measure the size of your trailer tongue. If you have a 3" x 4" coupler this...

You will need to change the 4-way connector on your trailer to the # 20017, and wire the blue wire of the connector to one end of the solenoid, and ground the other to the frame of the trailer. • Trailer Wiring for a Motorcycle Towing a Motorcycle Trailer
Normally, the 5-wire flat connector will accept a 4-wire flat connector and work properly. The extra circuit on the 5-wire connector is normally wired to power a reverse lockout or electric trailer brakes not the brake lights. If your motorcycle has the brake light circuit connected to the extra circuit you will need to do some re wiring or install a converter, item # 119178KIT, on the motorcycle. Your trailer should be wired as follows. White wire = ground, brown = taillight, yellow =...

  • What Are The Standard Colors And Functions For A 4 Flat On A Cargo Trailer
The standard 4 Flat will have the White (ground), Brown (running lights), Yellow (left turn and brake), and Green (right turn and brake). Black will typically be used for 12 volt power, but can also be any number of things. The only way to know for sure what it is used for will be to trace it to its source. • Is there a European 7-Way to US 4-Way Trailer Wiring Adapter for a BMW
Bascially, there is no easy way to convert the European 7-Way to a US 4-Way. We do not carry any kind of adapter that you could use. You are left with 2 options. First, you would install a separate wiring harness which would be the easiest. Or, you could attempt to fabricate an adapter. You would need to use a converter, # RM-732. The red wire on the input side would attach to the brake light wire on the vehicle wiring. The white wire grounds to the frame. The yellow wire will attach to...

So when you are in reverse, the trailer brakes will not be engaged. You would need a 7-way adapter like Adapter 7 Pole to 5 Pole Flat, part # A75TB. • 2012 Honda Goldwing Motorcycle 5-Way Trailer Wiring Recommendation
The 5-way harness on your 2012 Honda Goldwing is a wiring setup that has separate turn signals from the stop lights. What that means is there is a separate brake light bulb from the turn signal bulb on either side of the trailer. The fifth wire on your bike's trailer connector is not a reverse light circuit so it will be needed. Typical trailer wiring has the stop and turn signals combined so only 4 circuits are needed. You can wire up your trailer the same way and everything would be...
